Recently I’ve finally had the opportunity to visit Paris – the city of love, the city of lights and the city of desserts!
Paris, besides the crazy amount of culture and history, is famous for its desserts and top cuisine.
So if you are planning to go there (or just anywhere in France) and you have a sweet tooth as I do, you have to try these six desserts (or more of course!) that will make you droll for more.
I tried them myself and I have to say – it was definitely worth it! 🙂
French Desserts you should try:
1. Crêpes
Crêpe is a very thin pancake, much thinner than an American one and they serve it sweet or salty/savoury.
It can be stuffed with the whole bunch of different fillings, from only sugar and butter, Nutella, chocolate syrup or jam, to combinations like bacon, eggs, cheese and tomatoes or spinach and mushrooms. There is something for every taste and when in Paris, you have to try it at least once! 🙂
2. Croissants
Croissants are one of the most famous French foods, available in bakeries all over the world. They got their name because of the typical crescent shape and they are made of a layered yeast dough, which is layered with butter and then rolled and folded several times. You can get them in most grocery stores, as well as in every bakery – French pâtisserie. Its mouthwatering crispy crust and soft inside is something you shouldn’t miss out if you are in France. You can eat them plain or add jam, Nutella or cheese and some ham.
3. Moelleux au Chocolat
I absolutely adore anything with chocolate, so it’s not surprising that when I first encountered this French dessert, it was love at first taste. Moelleux au Chocolat is basically a very soft textured chocolate cake, a bit similar to a chocolate mousse, but not so foamy. It immediately became one of my favourite desserts.
If you are a chocolate lover, I 100 % recommend it!
Additional note: It goes great with coffee! 🙂
4. Flan Cake – Custard Pie
I am from Slovenia, a country where the beautiful Lake Bled is. There, you can have a dessert called Kremšnita, which is a cream cake made mostly from eggs, milk and sugar.
French Flan cake, also known as Custard pie, reminded me of it in texture and taste, the only difference being that in Flan cake one of the main ingredients is also butter, which gives the cake the distinct yellow colour. It can also have a caramel sauce as a topping. It was very juicy and not heavy on my stomach, but you should be careful with not eating too much of it since it contains a lot of cholesterol from the eggs and fats from the butter.
5. Paris–Brest
A Paris–Brest is a French dessert, made of light pastry dough called choux pastry and a praline flavoured cream. According to Wikipedia, it was created in 1910 to commemorate the Paris–Brest–Paris bicycle race, that begun in 1891. Its circular shape represents a wheel. It became popular with riders on the Paris–Brest cycle race (also because of its energising high caloric value) and is now found in pâtisseries all over France. The one I tried had a hazelnut cream filling and pistachios sprinkled on top. It was delicious and definitely worth a try.
6. Pain Aux Raisins
Pain aux raisins is a spirally shaped bread with raisins, filled with a crème pâtissière filling. I am not a huge fan of raisins in cakes, but this was a really delicious and filling treat which would go great with a cup of coffee.
I hope you like this list of six desserts you have to try when in France!
